    Launch geography

    Free

    Always, for everyone

    How it works

What a stand is, and where it stands.

Every stand is on the map with the titles currently on its shelf, and every one sits on ground a neighbor has offered in writing. Using a stand costs nothing, and so does hosting one.

    One map, one registry

Every stand lives in a single brand-styled map and a synchronized list — so a stand is always findable, by sight or by keyboard.

    Real books, real covers

Stands are stocked with curated titles, and the map can show the actual covers currently on the shelf — not a generic pin.

    Built on partner ground

Stands are placed on community gardens, churches, schools, and storefronts with written permission — never on contested sidewalks.

    Get Involved

Six ways to put books on the block

Whether you have a spot, a gift, or just a neighborhood that deserves one — there's a way in.

    Host a stand

Have a garden, stoop, church, school, or storefront? Offer the spot. We build, place, and stock the stand on your property.

    Offer a location

    Request one nearby

No stand on your block yet? Add your neighborhood to the waitlist — it tells our sponsors exactly where the next one should go.

    Request a stand

    Name a stand

One gift builds, places, and stocks a bookstand on a block that needs one — dedicated with a tribute plaque in your name or a loved one's.

    Sponsor a stand

    Join a book drive

Distribution events across NYC and Long Island. Bring books, volunteer, or simply come and take some home.

    Partner with us

Schools, libraries, community gardens, and faith groups host stands and co-host drives. Let's build a reading block together.

Built to last, built for everyone

Our stands are weather-resistant recycled-poly cabinets designed to survive New York seasons maintenance-free for years — with a sloped roof, UV-glazed door, and no lock, ever. Each one sits on a firm, level pad with its book opening reachable between 15 and 48 inches above grade, so a child, a wheelchair user, and a grandparent can all reach the same shelf.

And because every stand is placed on welcoming private or community ground with written permission, Legacy Library grows block by block — wherever a neighbor opens a door.

Put a book within reach of every child

Name a stand for a block that needs one — or tell us where the next one should go.
