How It Works
Lighter than the leader, and book-aware
The discipline of a real registry, without the paywall — and a map that actually tells you what's on the shelf.
One map, one registry
Every stand lives in a single brand-styled map and a synchronized list — so a stand is always findable, by sight or by keyboard.
Real books, real covers
Stands are stocked with curated titles, and the map can show the actual covers currently on the shelf — not a generic pin.
Built on partner ground
Stands are placed on community gardens, churches, schools, and storefronts with written permission — never on contested sidewalks.
Get Involved
Six ways to put books on the block
Whether you have a spot, a gift, or just a neighborhood that deserves one — there's a way in.
Built to last, built for everyone
Our stands are weather-resistant recycled-poly cabinets designed to survive New York seasons maintenance-free for years — with a sloped roof, UV-glazed door, and no lock, ever. Each one sits on a firm, level pad with its book opening reachable between 15 and 48 inches above grade, so a child, a wheelchair user, and a grandparent can all reach the same shelf.
And because every stand is placed on welcoming private or community ground with written permission, Legacy Library grows block by block — wherever a neighbor opens a door.
