African Penguin
Spheniscus demersus
The only penguin that breeds on the African continent, found along the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. Once numbering in the millions, the species has collapsed to a fraction of its historic population and was uplisted to Critically Endangered in 2024.
Natural History
Habitat
Rocky islands and a few mainland colonies along the southwestern coast of Africa, foraging in the cold, nutrient-rich Benguela Current.
Diet
Carnivore: small schooling fish such as sardines and anchovies, caught on pursuit dives.
Lifespan
10 to 15 years in the wild.
Behavior
Breeds in colonies, forming long-term pair bonds. Brays like a donkey — the source of its old name. Both parents share incubation and chick-rearing.
