Smaller than its African cousin and the largest land animal in Asia, the Asian elephant is deeply woven into the cultures of its range. Fewer than 50,000 remain in the wild, scattered across fragmented forests from India to Borneo.

Habitat
Grasslands, tropical and subtropical forests, and scrub across South and Southeast Asia.
Diet
Herbivore: grasses, bark, roots, and fruit — feeding up to 150 kg per day.
Lifespan
60 to 70 years.
Behavior
Highly social and matriarchal, like African elephants. Distinguished by smaller ears and a single finger-like tip on the trunk. Only some males grow tusks.
