    Module 2

Cardiac arrest is not a heart attackand the response is different.

The two get used interchangeably in ordinary speech. They are not the same event, and knowing which one is in front of you changes what helps.

When an emergency is possible, contact local emergency services now.

The difference in one line each

    • A heart attack is a circulation problem: blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. The person is usually awake and can describe what they feel.
    • Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem: the heart stops pumping effectively. The person collapses, does not respond, and is not breathing normally.

Hands-only CPR, as the American Heart Association describes it

For a teen or adult who collapses, the AHA describes two steps: call emergency services, then push hard and fast in the center of the chest. The AHA gives the rate as 100 to 120 compressions per minute, and suggests the beat of a familiar song at about 100 beats per minute as a way to hold the pace.

Where hands-only is not the guidance

The AHA continues to recommend CPR with compressions and rescue breaths for infants, children, victims of drowning or drug overdose, and people who collapse because of breathing problems. Hands-only guidance is for the collapsed teen or adult.

A note on what is deliberately absent here

This page gives the compression rate but not a compression depth. The commonly repeated depth figure could not be confirmed against an American Heart Association document during sourcing, and an unsourced number on emergency guidance is worse than no number. Formal AHA or Red Cross training covers depth with an instructor present.

What this module is and is not

This is awareness education. It is not a certification course, and The Legacy Foundation does not issue CPR certifications. Hands-on training from an authorized provider is a different and more complete thing.
